India's cotton output for the 2024-25 season is expected to remain close to last year's production of 325.22 lakh bales, despite an 11 lakh hectare drop in acreage as farmers shift to other crops. Experts attribute this to higher yields driven by timely rains and lower pest incidence, particularly reduced pink bollworm infestations. The overall crop condition is reportedly better, with regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka seeing healthy growth. Estimates range from 325 lakh to 361 lakh bales, though some areas have been affected by recent heavy rains. Pest control efforts and weather conditions in the coming months will be critical in determining the final output.

Key Highlights

* Cotton acreage down by 11 lakh hectares for 2024-25 season.

* Higher yields expected due to timely rains and lower pest attacks.

* Cotton production estimated to remain similar to last year's 325.22 lakh bales.

* Pink bollworm incidence low; management key in the later season.

* Experts optimistic about reversing the losses of previous years.

India's cotton production for the 2024-25 cropping season is projected to stay near last year's levels, despite an 11 lakh hectare decrease in cotton acreage. The current acreage stands at 112.76 lakh hectares, down from 123.71 lakh hectares as farmers have shifted to more lucrative crops. However, experts believe that higher yields, driven by favorable rainfall and reduced pest infestation, will balance out the reduction in area.

The cotton yield is expected to improve due to the limited presence of pests like the pink bollworm (PBW) and sucking pests. As reported by YG Prasad, Director at ICAR-Central Institute of Cotton Research, the overall crop condition is better this year. In regions like the North, where cotton arrivals are progressing, the pest situation is under control, contributing to improved cottonseed quality. Meanwhile, regions in Central and Southern India are also witnessing robust crop growth, aided by timely rains and effective pest management strategies.

The estimated cotton production for 2024-25 ranges from 325.22 lakh bales to around 361 lakh bales, according to industry experts such as Anand Poppat and Pradeep Jain. However, some areas in Maharashtra and Gujarat have experienced delays due to excessive rainfall, and experts caution against making final predictions too early.

Finally

With increased yields countering reduced acreage, India's cotton production for 2024-25 is expected to stay close to last year's levels, subject to continued favorable weather and pest control measures.
