CCI Procures Over 31 Lakh Bales of Cotton in 2024-25 Season by Amit Gupta, Kedia Advisory

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has procured over 31 lakh bales of cotton at minimum support price (MSP) till mid-December 2024, accounting for over a third of total market arrivals. The procurement operations have been conducted across all major cotton-producing states, with Telangana and Maharashtra leading the way. Raw cotton prices are currently below MSP levels due to weak demand from yarn mills and declining cottonseed prices. With an increased MSP for 2024-25, CCI aims to surpass last year’s procurement figures, which stood at 33 lakh bales. Additionally, trade body Cotton Association of India (CAI) reported daily market arrivals exceeding 2 lakh bales, with total cumulative arrivals reaching 83.30 lakh bales.

The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has achieved significant progress in its procurement efforts for the 2024-25 cotton season, with over 31 lakh bales procured till mid-December. This represents more than one-third of the total market arrivals, highlighting CCI's active role in supporting farmers through minimum support price (MSP) procurement. Lalit Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of CCI, stated that operations have been conducted across all cotton-producing states, with Telangana and Maharashtra witnessing the highest purchases.

However, raw cotton prices are currently trading below the MSP levels due to weak demand from yarn mills and declining cottonseed prices. The Centre has set an increased MSP of ?7,121 per quintal for medium staple cotton and ?7,521 per quintal for longer varieties for the 2024-25 season, marking a 7% rise from the previous year. With such support in place, CCI remains committed to surpassing last year's procurement figures of 33 lakh bales.

Furthermore, according to the Cotton Association of India (CAI), daily market arrivals have already surpassed 2 lakh bales, with cumulative arrivals reaching over 83.30 lakh bales across the country. Despite a reduction in cotton production estimates by around 7% at 302.25 lakh bales for 2024-25, adverse weather and reduced acreage continue to impact output in some regions.

Finally

CCI’s proactive procurement efforts are set to exceed last year’s figures, supporting farmers and stabilizing market prices amidst weaker raw cotton demand.
