Monsoon Rains May Ease Along West Coast Soon by Amit Gupta, Kedia Advisory

Heavy monsoon rainfall continues across parts of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, supported by a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea. However, weather models suggest that the current intense rainfall phase may begin weakening after the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects heavy rain to remain concentrated along the coastal belt of Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala on Wednesday before gradually decreasing in intensity and coverage. A western disturbance and slower monsoon progression could limit further advancement, though a potential Bay of Bengal system later this month may revive monsoon activity.

Key Highlights

  • Heavy rainfall continues across Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala under active monsoon conditions.
  • A cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea is strengthening moisture inflow.
  • Rainfall intensity is expected to ease after the next two days.
  • A western disturbance may slow monsoon progress across India.
  • A possible Bay of Bengal system could revive monsoon advancement later in June.

Monsoon activity remains vigorous across India's western coastline, bringing widespread rainfall to parts of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Strong moisture inflow associated with a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea has supported heavy showers across several regions, particularly along the coastal belt.

Weather conditions have remained favorable for rainfall over key agricultural regions, with widespread showers reported across interior Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The active monsoon phase has provided much-needed moisture for ongoing kharif sowing activities, particularly in southern and central parts of the country.

However, meteorological agencies indicate that the current spell of intense rainfall may not persist for long. According to forecasts, heavy rain on Wednesday is likely to remain concentrated mainly along coastal areas stretching from Goa through coastal Karnataka to northern Kerala. Thereafter, both the intensity and geographical coverage of rainfall are expected to gradually decline.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also highlighted the influence of a western disturbance affecting the Himalayan region over the coming days. The arrival of another weak western disturbance later this week could further slow the monsoon's northward progress. International weather models similarly suggest a temporary slowdown in monsoon advancement beginning later this week.

For Mumbai and adjoining regions, monsoon conditions remain less favorable due to relatively weak wind patterns, although intermittent thundershowers are possible under the influence of an approaching weather system over the Arabian Sea.

Looking ahead, weather experts are monitoring the possibility of a fresh circulation developing over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast around June 22-23. If the system strengthens, it could provide renewed momentum to monsoon advancement across Central India and the northern stretches of the west coast.

While heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the short term, a temporary weakening of monsoon activity appears likely before potential revival through a fresh Bay of Bengal weather system later this month.
