Kharif Sowing Trails Last Year Despite Recovery in Oilseeds by Amit Gupta, Kedia Advisory
India's Kharif sowing reached 894.22 lakh hectares as of the latest reporting period, down 26.50 lakh hectares from 920.72 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. The decline was led by Shree Anna & Coarse Cereals (-12.83 lakh ha), Rice (-6.89 lakh ha), Total Pulses (-6.41 lakh ha) and Cotton (-2.52 lakh ha). However, Total Oilseeds (+1.19 lakh ha), Sugarcane (+0.86 lakh ha) and Jute & Mesta (+0.12 lakh ha) recorded year-on-year gains. Mixed sowing trends indicate that while some crops have recovered, lower acreage in key food grains could continue supporting agricultural commodity prices.
Key Highlights
* Total Kharif sowing stood at 894.22 lakh hectares, down 26.50 lakh hectares from last year.
* Shree Anna & Coarse Cereals recorded the largest acreage decline of 12.83 lakh hectares.
* Rice and Total Pulses acreage fell by 6.89 lakh hectares and 6.41 lakh hectares, respectively.
* Total Oilseeds increased by 1.19 lakh hectares, led by higher groundnut and sesame sowing.
* Sugarcane, Jute & Mesta, and Urad also registered higher acreage compared to last year.
Agricultural commodity prices are likely to remain supported as the latest Kharif sowing data shows overall acreage continues to trail last year's level despite improvement in selected crops. Reduced planted area in major food grains raises concerns over production prospects, encouraging expectations of tighter supplies if weather conditions remain uneven during the remainder of the sowing season. At the same time, gains in oilseed acreage may partially offset supply concerns in that segment.
According to the latest Agriculture Ministry data, total Kharif sowing reached 894.22 lakh hectares, compared with 920.72 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year, reflecting a decline of 26.50 lakh hectares. Among major crop groups, Shree Anna & Coarse Cereals recorded the largest reduction of 12.83 lakh hectares, followed by Rice (-6.89 lakh hectares), Total Pulses (-6.41 lakh hectares) and Cotton (-2.52 lakh hectares). Within pulses, Tur, Moong, and Moth Bean registered lower acreage, while Urad expanded by 2.03 lakh hectares.
Oilseed sowing showed encouraging progress, with total acreage increasing by 1.19 lakh hectares year-on-year. The improvement was driven mainly by Groundnut (+1.16 lakh hectares) and Sesamum (+1.10 lakh hectares), while Soybean acreage remained broadly stable with only a marginal decline of 0.84 lakh hectares. Sugarcane acreage increased by 0.86 lakh hectares, and Jute & Mesta also recorded modest gains, indicating healthy planting activity in these crops.
Lower acreage in major cereals and pulses continues to underpin agricultural commodity prices, although improving oilseed sowing could ease supply concerns if favourable weather persists.
