We have curated a list of ten significant developments that occurred during the week, both within India and internationally, which may have implications for the Indian utilities including renewable sector in the future. Below is the weekly roundup on utilities/Power/RE for 12 – 18 May’25 comprising 10 key sector events during the week.
1. Avg daily energy/ max peak demand during week was 5,047 MU (3% YoY, 1% YTDFY26)/ 235 GW (3% YoY, 1% YTDFY26).
2. Indonesia's exports of thermal coal dropped (150MT, -12% YoY) to their lowest in 3 years during Jan-Apr 2025, dented by weak demand in China and India.
3. Central utilities released 14.4 GW of solar tenders in 1QCY25, a 53.1% YoY. The auctioned capacity was down 74.4% YoY from 25 GW.
4. India attracted USD19.8bn in clean energy investment during FY25, comprising USD 12.2bn in debt financing and USD 7.5bn in equity according to an industry report.
5. During Apr’24 to Feb’25, India’s public EV charging stations consumed approx. 764 MU of electricity (40% Delhi, 25% Maharashtra, 9% Karnataka, 8% Gujarat) as per Central Electricity Authority.
6. Govt to set up five Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) testbeds at cement plants capturing CO? emitted during industrial processes and converting it into value-added products such as synthetic fuels, urea, or concrete aggregates.
7. Central Transmission Utility of India (CTUIL) proposes 3 Acre/100 MWh land benchmark for BESS Projects.
8. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued application form for solar PV cell manufacturers seeking enlistment in ALMM List-II. From June 2026 onwards, Indian solar module manufacturers have to use domestically produced solar cells only.
9. US energy officials found unexplained and rogue communication equipment inside some Chinese-made solar inverters and batteries which could remotely bypass the cybersecurity firewalls.
