The gap from the corresponding period a year ago is 3%, and experts anticipate it may narrow to 1-2% by the end of the season, primarily due to a decline in pulses acreage.

Wheat Acreage and Deficit Trends: The area under wheat for the current season has surpassed the normal acreage of 307.32 lakh hectares, narrowing the deficit to 2% compared to the previous year. The sowing deficit decreased from 3% to 2% as of December 22, with wheat acreage reaching 308.667 lakh hectares, slightly lower than 314.42 lakh hectares a year ago.

Pulses Acreage Trends: Rabi pulses acreage, including gram and lentils, has reached 137.13 lakh hectares, down by 8% from 148.53 lakh hectares last year. Gram's acreage is down by 9%, reaching 94.03 lakh hectares, covering 93% of the normal area of 100.92 lakh hectares. The lower pulses acreage in some states is attributed to late harvesting of kharif crops, diversions to other crops, and soil moisture deficits.

Mustard Acreage: Mustard acreage has consistently exceeded the previous year's figures, reaching 95.23 lakh hectares as of December 22, up by 2% from 93.46 lakh hectares a year ago.

Rabi Oilseeds Overview: All rabi oilseeds acreage stands at 102.38 lakh hectares, slightly higher than 102.21 lakh hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage is down by 87,000 hectares at 3.12 lakh hectares.

Paddy Acreage and Expectations: Paddy acreage is reported at 12.67 lakh hectares, compared to 14.04 lakh hectares a year ago. The normal area under winter paddy is 52.5 lakh hectares, and the government expects to achieve the normal area or more.

Coarse Cereals Trends: The sowing area for coarse cereals has reached 46.01 lakh hectares, up by 3% from 44.83 lakh hectares. Jowar acreage is slightly lower, while maize acreage is up by 6% at 16.73 lakh hectares.

Barley Sowing Increase: Barley sowing is up by 4%, reaching 8.01 lakh hectares compared to 7.71 lakh hectares a year ago.
