Utilities & Power Equipment Sector Update : 10 POWER points; A weekly roundup on power & utilities #23/FY26 By JM Financial Services Ltd

We have curated a list of 10 significant developments that occurred during the week 1 - 7 Sep’25, both within India and internationally, which may have implications for Indian utilities, including the renewable sector, in future.
- Avg daily energy/ max peak demand during week was 4,526MU (-1% YoY, 0% YTDFY26)/ 210 GW (0% YoY, -3% YTDFY26).
- WAvg MCP for the week was INR 2.9/kWh (vs. 3.4 last week) with daily avg buy/ sell/ traded volume of 210MU/ 595MU/ 149 MU.
- Domestic coal prices moved slightly higher this week, with 5,000GCV assessed at INR 5,750/tn, up INR 50/tn WoW, and 4,500 GCV at INR 4,900/t, up INR 100/tn WoW.
- Government reduced GST rate on solar and wind energy equipment to 5% from 12%, while increasing the rate on coal and lignite to 18% from 5%.
- Coal production from captive and commercial mines across India rose by 11.88% YoY to 73.92MT during the Apr–Aug’25.
- Kerala exploring the possibility of setting up a thorium-based nuclear power plant, first in the world.
- Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) issued an order to the discoms capping supply interruptions for various categories of consumers. By FY27, consumers in cities with a population above one lakh will not have to bear more than 90 outages/ year, capped at 60 hours in total.
- Central Electricity Authority (CEA) working on guidelines for reducing technical minimum load requirements and installation of battery storage systems at some coal power plants to capture excess energy and dispatch it to the grid at a later point when needed.
- Global solar PV installations in 1HCY25 stands at 380GW dc (64% YoY) with 256GW from China, 18GW from India and 21GW (4% YoY) from US.
- “We have recorded 22GW solar and wind capacity from 1st January to 30th June this year and by this time we have done around 30GW. I am hopeful that we will end up with (capacity addition) between 39GW and 43GW that we may achieve this year,” Mr Prahlad Joshi, Minister for New and Renewable Energy.
