• Oil retreats as diplomacy outweighs supply disruption concerns: Oil prices edged lower on Thursday as investors weighed progress in Iran-Oman talks that could pave the way for a U.S.-Iran peace deal and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns over global oil supply. Brent crude fell 0.5% to $79.08/bbl, while WTI declined 0.7% to $74.69/bbl, with prices retreating toward levels seen after the interim U.S.-Iran agreement in June. However, geopolitical risks remained elevated as Iran warned of retaliation against regional energy infrastructure if attacked, while Houthi missile strikes on Saudi oil tankers raised concerns over Red Sea shipping disruptions. Adding to the bearish sentiment, U.S. crude inventories unexpectedly increased by 2.5 million barrels in the week ended July 31, against expectations of a 1.5 million-barrel draw, indicating softer near-term demand.
