Economic News

• Democrats' US midterm sweep may give India more room to negotiate a balanced trade deal with Trump: Democrats' takeover of both chambers of the US Congress could ease pressure on India in trade negotiations with the Trump administration, experts said. Greater Congressional scrutiny of tariffs may create opportunities for Indian exporters, although the existing 18% tariff is unlikely to change immediately and the bilateral trade agreement could face delays.

Global News

• Democratic victory lifted global markets and renewable stocks, while oil and Asian tech stocks declined: US midterm election results delivered a major victory for Democrats, raising expectations of reduced US-Iran war tensions and easing concerns over energy supply disruptions. Brent crude plunged nearly 9% overnight to below $100/bbl, extending its weekly decline to around 20%, while lower oil prices eased inflation concerns, supported a bond rally and weakened the dollar to a one-month low. The S&P 500 gained 1.6%, while European equities touched a two-month high. However, Asian markets remained under pressure, with South Korea’s KOSPI falling 4% and Taiwan’s index declining 1.8%, as expectations of tighter AI and data-centre regulations weighed on semiconductor and technology stocks. Democrats' strong performance also boosted solar and renewable energy stocks on expectations of greater policy support.

The 30-year bond yield slid 3 basis points to 5.29%, and the shorter-term 2-year note yield was broadly flat at 4.6101%.
