India’s agricultural sector has witnessed record-breaking performance in the 2024-25 season, with wheat, rice, and maize production reaching new highs. According to the Ministry of Agriculture’s latest estimates, wheat production has surged to 1,154.30 lakh tonnes, an increase of 21.38 lakh tonnes from last year. Kharif rice output has also seen a substantial rise, reaching 1,206.79 lakh tonnes, marking an increase of 74.20 lakh tonnes compared to 2023-24.
Higher foodgrain production is expected to stabilize domestic prices, ensuring sufficient stocks for both consumption and exports. The increase in output is attributed to favorable weather conditions, improved agricultural practices, and government support initiatives. However, concerns remain over the impact of rainfall shortages on overall yield.
Maize production has also grown significantly, with Kharif maize at 248.11 lakh tonnes and Rabi maize at 124.38 lakh tonnes. The oilseed sector has performed well, with soybean production increasing by 20.70 lakh tonnes to 151.32 lakh tonnes, and rapeseed-mustard production estimated at 128.73 lakh tonnes. Additionally, cotton production has been recorded at 294.25 lakh bales, while sugarcane output stands at a robust 4,350.79 lakh tonnes.
Finally
India’s record foodgrain production in 2024-25 is set to boost food security and stabilize prices. Strong growth in wheat, rice, and oilseeds underscores the country’s agricultural resilience and productivity.
