Telecom Sector - Active subscriber base declines for all players By Motilal Oswal Financial Services

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released subscriber data for Jul’22. Here are the key highlights:

* Gross subscriber growth for the industry as a whole was flat, with 0.6m MoM additions at 1,148m. The same has remained flat since Mar’22, after the decline from Aug’21 to Feb’22, hinting at a stabilization in the trend. Subscriber additions were largely in RJio (which continued from Mar’22). The same for BHARTI was stable. IDEA continued to lose subscribers (which continued from Apr’21, down 1.5m MoM).

* The decline in the active subscriber base for all players was in the 1-1.8m range. The same fell 4.4m MoM to 1,013m for the industry as a whole. IDEA saw a decline of 1.8m MoM in its active subscriber base. The same for BHARTI/RJio declined by ~1m MoM each.

* BHARTI saw a gross subscriber addition of 0.5m MoM (v/s additions of 0.8m in Jun’22), maintaining its gross subscriber market share at 31.7%. Its active subscriber base fell by 1m MoM to 356m in Jul’22. However, its active subscriber market share increased marginally by 10bp to 35.2%. 4G subscriber additions increased by 2.6m MoM to 217m.

* RJio: Gross subscriber additions were the highest for the industry, with 2.9m additions in Jul’22 (v/s 4.2m in Jun’22). However, the active subscriber base fell by 1.1m MoM to 382m. RJio retained its pole position at 37.7% in Jul’22.

* IDEA continued to lose gross/active subscribers, down 1.5m/1.8m on a MoM basis (v/s 1.8m/1.4m in Jun’22) to 255m/217m. Its 4G subscriber base remained flat at 123m after reporting a reduction of 0.3m in Jun’22.

* 4G subscribers: The pace of industrywide 4G subscriber additions continued, with healthy additions of 5.7m (similar to Jun’22), taking its total 4G subscriber base to 777m. RJio continued its lead within 4G subscriber additions, with 2.9m additions, followed by BHARTI, which added 2.6m subscribers, and IDEA, with flat subscriber additions in Jul’22.

* The number of wired broadband subscribers for the industry grew by 0.8m to 29.5m. RJio/BHARTI added 0.11m/0.14m subscribers, while BSNL’s subscriber base remained flat at 3.9m.
