Market Round-up - 19th August 2026 by Motilal Oswal Wealth Mangement
• Equity benchmark indices continued their downward trend, with the Nifty extending losses for the seventh consecutive session—the longest losing streak since September 2025. Rising crude oil prices, which surged to a two-week high above $91 per barrel, weak global market cues, and escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran weighed heavily on investor sentiment. Concerns intensified after Trump stated that the US is not engaged in any peace talks with Iran.
• The Nifty declined 78 points, or 0.3%, to close below the 24,100 mark at 24,078. Broader markets also remained under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices witnessing continued selling. The Nifty 500 advance-decline ratio stood at 1:2, indicating aggressive selling pressure across the small- and mid-cap segments.
• Market participants also adopted a cautious stance ahead of the release of the FOMC minutes, looking for clues on whether the US Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates unchanged or consider a rate hike at its September 15–16 policy meeting. Rising global bond yields, elevated crude oil prices, weak international markets, and heightened geopolitical risks continued to weigh on market sentiment.
• Sugar stocks were the standout gainers, supported by a surge in raw sugar prices to a 14-month high. Renuka Sugar, Avadh Sugar, Dhampur Sugar, Bajaj Hindusthan, and Dalmia Bharat Sugar gained up to 10%. On the other hand, FMCG, auto, and defence stocks were among the major losers.
• Globally, Asian and European markets declined as investors monitored the ongoing global chip sell-off and persistent tensions in the Middle East.
Technical Outlook:
• Nifty index opened on a flattish note and witnessed selling pressure from the initial hour which dragged the index towards the psychological 24000 zones where it found some support and remained in a sideways to negative trend throughout the session as momentum remained in favour of the bears. Now if it holds below 24100 zones weakness could be seen towards 23900 then 23800 zones while on the upside hurdles can be seen at 24200 then 24300 zones.
• S&P BSE Sensex index opened on a flattish note near 77200 zones and witnessed selling pressure in the first couple of hours and the index slipped towards 76800. Post which the index got stuck in a range of nearly 200 points with a negative bias as every bounce was sold into. It formed a bearish candle on the daily chart and continues its lower highs formation of the last twelve sessions indicating bears continue to have the upper hand. Now till it holds below 77000 zones, weakness could be seen towards 76500 then 76200 zones while hurdles have shifted lower to 77200 then 77500 zones.
