Maharashtra has nearly completed its kharif sowing with 98% of the targeted area covered, reflecting a strong agricultural effort this season. Despite this progress, heavy rainfall has caused significant crop damage, affecting over 1.44 lakh hectares. The sowing of various crops, including maize and soybean, is in the final stages. Sowing Progress: Maharashtra has achieved 98% completion of kharif sowing (excluding sugarcane), with 13.946 million hectares sown out of a targeted 14.202 million hectares. Including sugarcane, 92% of the area has been covered.

Comparison with 2023: As of August 7, 2023, 87% of the kharif area was sown including sugarcane, compared to 92% this year. The current year's sowing progress is slightly ahead of last year’s.

Crop Stages: Paddy and millet replanting is nearly complete with crops in early growth stages. Sowing for sorghum, pearl millet, maize, soybean, and other crops is in the final stages. Some crops are in the flowering or early growth phases.

Sugarcane Planting: New Adsali sugarcane planting has commenced. Operations are ongoing in seasonal, ratoon, and stubble sugarcane fields, indicating continued focus on sugarcane production.

Rainfall Impact: The State received 766.5 mm of rainfall by August 5, 2024, 131.1% of the average, causing significant crop damage. Affected area includes 1,44,141.18 hectares, with 500.31 hectares of land washed away.

Damage Report: Heavy rains in July 2024 led to crop damage and affected fruit plantations. The preliminary assessment highlights extensive damage, with substantial areas impacted by flooding and erosion.
