Below the Comment on World Economic Forum's 2024 Global Risk Report from James Fisher, Chief Strategy Officer for Qlik

“It’s concerning to see that misinformation and disinformation caused by AI has been ranked as one of the biggest global risks of 2024 - but not necessarily surprising.

AI and Generative AI have huge promise to enhance productivity and prosperity - but they must be used and developed with caution. Innovation shouldn’t come at the expense of regulation, and the current hallucinations and misdirections from Generative AI risk breaking down trust in the technology altogether - especially as we go into a year of numerous political elections.

The AI Summit was a powerful first step towards creating the right regulation around AI - and at the end of 2023, we saw the EU AI Act go through its first approval stages. This is encouraging, but businesses must carefully consider how they use and train AI.

We are a long way from businesses widely trusting AI with critical business data, but it must be rigorously vetted when using it in areas like analytics. Guard rails will be needed for data quality and governance, and data privacy must be respected. Even then, it should be applied with care. And biases can still creep in, and hallucinations can occur, so humans are still essential in the process to avoid the risk of misinformation.”
