Telecom Sector Update : JioFiber seeks to expand market with affordable 10mbps plan By JM Financial Institutional Securities
Jio has announced a new home broadband 10mbps unlimited data plan with the following features: a) INR 198/month (no OTT apps), b INR 298/month (6 OTT apps), and c) INR 398/month (14 OTT apps). However, the tariff and benefits of JioFiber’s existing 30mbps and 100mbps plans are unchanged. We believe Jio aims to expand the market with this low-cost 10mbps plan (given fibre penetration in India is still only ~10% of households) by improving the affordability of JioFiber.
* 10mbps unlimited data at INR 198/month: Jio has announced a new home broadband “Back-up plan” starting 30th Mar’23. This will provide unlimited data at a speed of 10Mbps and landline voice calls for 5 months for INR 990 (effective monthly price of INR 198); the subscriber also has to pay INR 500 as installation charges. This new concept of a back-up connection will allow homes to have alternate broadband connectivity with assured data access at an affordable price. It will help Jio expand its broadband subscriber base into unconnected homes as well as homes with slower / old DSL connections.
* Upgrade speed from 10 Mbps to 30/100 Mbps with 1/2/7 day options starting at INR 27/day: This back-up broadband connection will enable uninterrupted high definition streaming of the upcoming Tata IPL tournament besides other content including live sports. Users will get a choice to upgrade the speed (from 10 Mbps to 30 /100 Mbps) as and when they need, with 1/2/7 day options starting at INR 27/day, at the click of a button.
* Upgrade to unlimited entertainment at only an additional INR 100/ 200 per month, which gives access to upto 14 OTT apps: Further, by paying only an additional INR 100/ 200 per month, users can upgrade to unlimited entertainment with access to upto 14 OTT apps; in addition they can watch Tata IPL live and free with Jiocinema and get access to upto 550+ live channels.
* JioFiber targets to expand market: The tariffs for the 10Mbps plan are: a) INR 198/month (No OTT apps); b) INR 298/month (6 OTT apps); and c) INR 398/month (14 OTT apps). However, tariff and benefits of JioFiber’s existing 30mbps and 100mbps plans are unchanged. We believe the introduction of this low-cost 10Mbps plan is to further expand market size (given fibre penetration is still limited to 10% of households in India) by improving the affordability of JioFiber.
