Nifty 50 gained 2.17% in July, with broader indices also positive: Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund
According to Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund's Global Market snapshot report, the Nifty Next 50 gained 2.82% in July, recording the highest monthly gain among the indices. The Nifty 50 rose 2.17% over the month, while the Nifty 500 gained 2.02%. The Nifty Midcap 150 increased 1.60%, followed by the Nifty Smallcap 250, which rose 1.13%. The Nifty Microcap 250 recorded a gain of 0.14% over the month. Overall, all the indices covered in the snapshot recorded positive returns over the one-month period ending July 31, 2026.

Nifty 50 gained 2.17% in July, with broader indices also positive. Midcaps gained 1.60%, Smallcaps gained 1.13%, reflecting strength beyond large caps.
Among sectors, IT emerged as the strongest-performing sector in July, gaining 16.77% over the month. Consumer Durables and Realty also recorded strong gains of 9.96% and 8.67%, respectively, followed by Auto, which rose 8.55%. Healthcare gained 3.82%, while Metal and FMCG increased 1.60% and 0.67%, respectively. On the other hand, Energy declined 2.54%, while Defence and Bank fell 1.98% and 0.48%, respectively. Overall, seven of the ten sectors recorded positive returns in July, with IT leading the gains and Energy posting the steepest decline.

Momentum declined 1.11% in the month of July, though it remains up 2.67% over the past year, while Low Volatility and Quality gained 1.75% and 1.78%, respectively, in July. Enhanced Value ended lower in July, declining 0.14%, however it has still delivered a positive return of 10.54% over the past year.


Nifty 500 was up by 2.02% in July, driven largely by Consumer Discretionary, Information Technology, and Healthcare, while Industrials, Utilities, and Services remained negative.

Global Market Update
US equities were mixed in July.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.32%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 declined 0.13% and 6.61%, respectively. Over the past year, the Nasdaq 100 delivered the strongest gain of 21.78%, followed by the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 18.93% and the S&P 500 at 18.15%.

Information Technology weighed down the index returns by 1.24%, while Industrials and Utilities sectors also contributed negatively
In emerging markets, China and Brazil gained 8.60% and 6.28%, while Korea was sharply down by 17.11% and Taiwan fell 5.80%. In developed markets, UK gained 5.21% and Germany rose 3.19%, while France added 1.86% and Japan saw a modest gain of 1.02%.
Crude oil emerged as the strongest gainer, rising sharply by 21.83% over the past month to $84.67 a barrel. Gold, on the other hand, remained largely flat at $4,026 an ounce, while the Indian rupee held steady against the US dollar, with USD/INR moving 0.80% during the month. Meanwhile, crypto markets moved higher, with Ethereum gaining 16.89% and Bitcoin rising 8.04% over the past month, although both remained lower over the preceding six-month period.

India: CPI inflation edged up to 4.30% from 3.90%, while the repo rate held steady at 5.25% and the 10 year yield eased slightly to 6.81%.
FII inflows saw a strong resurgence during the month, reaching Rs 40,031 crore, while DII equity inflows stood at Rs 17,909 crore, reflecting continued participation from both foreign and domestic investors in equities. In contrast, DII debt investments recorded outflows of Rs 36,271 crore during the month.
United States CPI inflation fell to 3.50% from 4.20%, even as the Fed kept rates unchanged at 3.75%.
