Gas stocks trade higher as government comes out with incentive scheme to boost domestic PNG connections

Most of the city gas distribution (CGD) stocks traded higher after the Government of India approved an incentive scheme aimed at accelerating the adoption of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) connections across the country. The scheme will come into effect from September 1, 2026.

Mahanagar Gas is currently trading at Rs. 1134.30, up by 23.65 points or 2.13% from its previous closing of Rs. 1110.65 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 1131.30 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 1171.05 and Rs. 1131.30 respectively. So far 88604 shares were traded on the counter.

Indraprastha Gas is currently trading at Rs. 154.30, up by 4.85 points or 3.25% from its previous closing of Rs. 149.45 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 153.25 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 158.00 and Rs. 152.10 respectively. So far 1046417 shares were traded on the counter.

Adani Total Gas is currently trading at Rs. 667.65, up by 19.95 points or 3.08% from its previous closing of Rs. 647.70 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 648.50 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 687.90 and Rs. 648.50 respectively. So far 495544 shares were traded on the counter.

Under the scheme, eligible CGD entities will receive an additional 200 SCM (Standard Cubic Metres) of domestically produced, lower-priced (APM) gas for every new billed domestic PNG connection above the threshold set for their respective Geographical Area. The scheme will be implemented in two tranches over a period of six months.

The additional gas allocation will help CGD entities replace some of the costlier Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) they currently procure for their Compressed Natural Gas (Transport) segment. This will reduce their overall gas-sourcing costs. These cost savings are likely to reduce the payback period for capital expenditure incurred in domestic PNG connections from around 10 years to around 3 years. This will give CGD companies a strong financial incentive to expand household PNG connections more rapidly.
