In a significant move aimed at stabilizing prices and supporting pulse farmers, the Union Agriculture Ministry has approved the procurement of summer moong and urad in Madhya Pradesh and urad in Uttar Pradesh at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The procurement will be executed under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), a part of the broader government effort to safeguard farmer interests.
This decision follows recent price drops in the mandi rates of moong and urad due to increasing arrivals and subdued private demand. The announcement of MSP procurement is expected to lend price support and reassure farmers during the peak harvest period.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a key meeting with state agriculture ministers Aidal Singh Kansana (MP) and Surya Pratap Shahi (UP), alongside Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi. Chouhan directed procurement agencies — Nafed and NCCF — to ensure timely, transparent, and fair crop procurement.
The minister highlighted that, despite the financial strain on the Centre, the Narendra Modi-led government remains committed to farmer welfare. He called for the use of advanced technology for proper farmer registration and recommended increasing the number of procurement centres if needed to facilitate smoother operations.
Chouhan also addressed concerns over reported irregularities in storage and instructed officials to take strict preventive measures. He emphasized eliminating the influence of middlemen by promoting direct procurement from farmers, ensuring they receive full benefit from the scheme.
