The Economy Observer - Monsoon Diary: No signs of southwest monsoon retreating By Motilal Oswal Financial Services
Southwest monsoon at a 7% surplus as of 27th Sep’22
* With only three days left for the southwest monsoon season to officially come to an end, rainfall still seems to be in abundance in the central and southern regions. Therefore, all-India cumulative rainfall, which has been in the range of +7% to +10% since the beginning of Aug’22, still stood at a surplus of 7% as of 27th Sep’22 (refer to Exhibits 1, 2, and 3). While rainfall in the eastern region had gone into a deficit beginning Jul’22 (still remains in deficit), that in the north-western region went into deficit beginning Sep’22.
* However, as of 23rd Sep’22, Kharif sowing was ~101% of normal sowing, lower than ~104% during the same period last year and the year before (refer to Exhibit 4).
* Month-wise rainfall received over CY02-21 showed that on an average June received only 19% of the season’s rainfall, July received almost one-third, followed by August at 29%. In CY21, while June received 21% of the rainfall, July received 30%, followed by August at 22% (refer to Exhibit 5).
