Taiwan`s oppn. leader makes rare visit to China amid increased Chinese military pressure
Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun has departed for China on what she calls a “journey of peace,” with a possible meeting expected with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit comes amid rising military pressure from China and growing tensions over Taiwan’s defence spending plans. Cheng, who chairs the Kuomintang (KMT), is making the first such visit by a party leader to China in a decade. The trip also comes ahead of a scheduled summit involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi in Beijing. Meanwhile, China continues to refuse engagement with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, calling him a “separatist,” further escalating tensions in the region.
