A BJP win in West Bengal would be a major political shift, given the state’s long history of non-BJP dominance, from the Left Front era to the current rule of Mamata Banerjee led TMC. This validates the Modi+Shah policy strategy of welfare and national security. The implications would ripple well beyond the state. Expansion of BJP’s eastern footprint in a big state ahead of next year’s UP election strengthen its narrative of becoming a truly pan-India party. This may also accelerate administrative clearances for central schemes in the state, with better Centre-State alignment and could be positive for the State’s industrial policy & manufacturing in the medium term. However, state’s fiscal discipline vs populist spending would become a key test in the near term.
A possible win by Vijay (and his party, TVK) would mean a wholly new era of disruptiive politics in TN, led by a system-level shift in a state long dominated by duopoly of Dravidian parties like the DMK and AIDMK. This personality-driven politics of Vijay represents a digital-era, youth-driven mobilisation model. However, Vijay’s ideology appears heavily bent on welfare populism+ development policies.
