Below the Comment on Delhi smog by Viswajit Srinivasan, a senior banker of Indian origin based out of UK on Delhi smog
Delhi has been suffering for the last many years now particularly in winter given lower temperatures coupled with pollution. This year pollution levels are over 50 times higher than the WHO recommended safe limit. While the Government has taken measures such as pausing non-critical construction activity and shutting down schools, these will not resolve the key factors that contribute to pollution. It is estimated that over 40% of the pollution is caused by stubble burning by farmers as well as construction activity and vehicular traffic. It must be emphasised that there are no quick fixes to resolving this - there have to be stringent norms with respect to heavy vehicles entering and leaving the city, traffic management to take cars off the road, enhanced public transportation infrastructure, push towards electric vehicles along with greening the city and ensuring stubble burning does not continue in states neighbouring Delhi in contravention of the law.
