Sulfadimethoxine is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacteria from synthesizing folic acid, an essential compound for their growth and survival. It achieves this by acting as a competitive inhibitor against para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA).

This drug is widely approved and used in dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles, and livestock. It is the most common medication prescribed for the treatment of coccidiosis (an intestinal parasite infection) in dogs. It is also effective against various respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue bacterial infections.
