2023 ODI World Cup about to commence: All you need to know
The ODI World Cup 2023 is about to get underway and there is a palpable buzz surrounding the marquee event. India are the host of the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup. More than a billion population of India is quite excited about the tournament and they expect India to lift the trophy for the third time. India have won the 1983 ODI World Cup and 2011 World Cup. If India lift the trophy, they will become the second most successful team in the World Cups. As far as records are concerned, Australia are the most successful team with 5 World Cup titles in their kitty. West Indies and India are the teams that have won two trophies each. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have clinched a trophy each.
There is every reason to consider India as the ‘favourites’ to win the trophy as the last three World Cups have been won by the host teams – India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019. Moreover, India holds the pinnacle spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings with 5,085 points, way ahead of second spot holder Pakistan, who have 3,102 points. The team is settled with some exciting players in good form and with a good track record in home conditions.
The 2023 ODI World Cup will be played by 10 teams - India, England, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Netherlands. It will be played in the same format as was in the last ODI World Cup played in England. It will be played with a round-robin stage, followed by knockouts and then the finals. Group stage is called Super 10, where all the teams will play against each other and the four most successful teams will then play the Super 4 or the semi-finals. The World Cup will be played between October 05 and November 19.
This year, the winner of the first two World Cups, West Indies have not qualified for 2023 edition of the World Cup. Zimbabwe, the team that have been a regular participant in the World Cup events in the past, have also not qualified. The first match of the World Cup will be played today between the defending champion England and New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The finals will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19.
