Equities extended their decline for a third straight session, with the Sensex falling 504 points to 85,138 and the Nifty closing at 26,032. Sentiment remained fragile as the rupee hit a record low of 89.92 against the US dollar, driven by strong dollar demand from corporates, importers and persistent FPI outflows. Foreign investors sold over Rs.1,170 crore on Monday, adding to sustained pressure on domestic equities.
Profit-booking in private banks also weighed on the indices, overshadowing yesterday’s record intraday highs. Elevated crude prices and currency volatility kept investors cautious. All focus now shifts to the upcoming RBI policy, where markets are hopeful of a long-pending double rate cut. A supportive stance could revive sentiment, particularly for the BFSI sector, which is already showing early signs of momentum.
