Pharmaceuticals Sector Update : CDMOs building for a tide, not a transfer by InCred Equities
* CDMO pool is growing rather than changing hands. WuXi AppTec grew 38.9%, Lonza grew 16.0%, & a few Indian firms frame the opportunity as displacement.
* Capital is running ahead of demand. Peer set FY26 capex was Rs81.85bn, at 15.5% of sales. No company discloses a take-or-pay clause or an order book.
* Consensus adds~US$1.1bn to the peer set revenue by FY28F, ~1.6x the entire estimated China-plus-one prize, six peers trade above 38x FY27F EV/EBITDA.
Growth is there, but not because China is losing it
The China-plus-one case assumes Chinese revenue is at risk. WuXi AppTec shows the opposite, with 1H2026 revenue up 38.9% and backlog up 25.2% through the period in which BIOSECURE became a law in the US. Lonza grew 16.0% in constant currency terms on a 34.8% margin, and outsourcing penetration keeps rising, at 73% of 2025 US novel drug approvals. India participates in an expanding pool on merit, a more durable setup than a market share war, but one that removes the share-gain premise the sector is priced on
The build is large, and the risk sits with shareholders
FY26 capex across the peer set was Rs81.85bn or 15.5% of sales. Each rupee deployed since FY22 has added Re0.54 to revenue, around half of what the utilised capacity delivers in this peer set, with Divi’s Laboratories the lowest at Re0.27. No domestic company discloses an order book, against WuXi AppTec at ~US$9.2bn and Samsung Biologics at US$21.7bn. Bachem, PolyPeptide and Catalent each show what happens when capacity arrives before demand, and Piramal Pharma Solutions has already written off Rs1.76bn.
Peptides are the loudest bet and the most exposed
Every name is building peptide capacity, but even the largest disclosed Indian position is ~0.75% of WuXi AppTec's volume. GLP-1 peptide API demand is projected at ~79,000kg by 2030F from its published regional components, against ~US$1.9bn of peptide capacity programmes announced by the Western specialists and Neuland Laboratories. Indian semaglutide prices fell from Rs16,400 a month to as little as Rs3,400 a month within weeks of patent expiry. Orforglipron, an oral non-peptide GLP-1 approved in Apr 2026, is the substitution risk no company addressed.
Multiples embed years of uninterrupted compounding
Consensus takes peer-set revenue from Rs529bn to Rs717bn by FY28F, adding ~US$1.1bn to annual contract revenue, ~1.6x the entire estimated China-plus-one prize. Divi's Laboratories and Anthem Biosciences need ~4.5 to 4.6 years of that growth to reach a still-premium 20x EV/EBITDA, against the ~22.9x FY24 EBITDA Novo Holdings paid for control of Catalent. WuXi AppTec's backlog, order book disclosure in India and capex conversion are the markers that would change the view.
