Nifty & Bank Nifty Weekly Outlook 18-10-2026 by Choice Broking Ltd
NIFTY WEEKLY OUTLOOK – 17 th October 2026
The Nifty index started the week at 22,593.20, opening around 72 points higher than the previous close. Initial selling pressure dragged the index to a weekly low of 22,288.45, where strong buying interest emerged. The index subsequently staged a sharp recovery of nearly 860 points, reaching a weekly high of 23,149.85 on the final trading day before closing at 23,146.15, up 625.70 points (+2.78%) for the week. The strong recovery reflects renewed buying interest at lower levels and an improvement in near-term market sentiment.
From a momentum perspective, the weekly RSI has recovered to around 42.37 from lower levels, indicating improving momentum after the recent correction. However, it remains below the neutral 50 mark and its average near 44.45, suggesting that further strength would be needed to confirm a sustained bullish reversal.
Sector-wise, market participation was broadly positive, led by Nifty IT, which surged 11.72% and closed above its 50-Week EMA, approaching its previous weekly swing high. Tech Mahindra was among the standout performers, gaining around 18%. Nifty Media advanced 6.11%, breaking out of its sideways weekly range, while Auto gained 3.65% after finding support near its multi-month rising trendline. Realty rose 4.55% and continued to trade above its 200-Week EMA support zone. Financials, Energy, Metal and Bank indices also closed higher. In contrast, Pharma declined 0.69% and FMCG fell 0.55%, making them the only notable sectors to end the week in negative territory.
Technically, Nifty has staged a meaningful rebound from the 200-Week EMA and rising trendline support, improving the short-term outlook. The strong bullish weekly candle indicates renewed demand at lower levels, although the index is yet to reclaim the 50-Week EMA. A sustained move above the immediate resistance zone would strengthen the recovery, while holding above the recent support base remains important to preserve the improving structure.
On the upside, immediate resistance is placed at 23,400 and 23,800. A decisive breakout above this zone could extend the recovery and improve the broader technical outlook. On the downside, support is seen at 22,700 and 22,500. Holding this region would help sustain the recovery, whereas a breakdown below it could revive selling pressure. Traders may adopt a selective approach while monitoring the index's ability to sustain above the recent breakout levels.
Support Levels :- 22,500 - 22,700
Resistance Levels :- 23,400 - 23,800
Overall Bias :- Sideways to Bullish

BANKNIFTY WEEKLY OUTLOOK – 17th October 2026
Bank Nifty opened the week at 55,350.15, around 93 points above the previous week's close, but initially witnessed profit booking and slipped to a weekly low of 54,708.80 on the first trading session. Buying interest emerged from lower levels on the following session, triggering a sharp recovery that continued through the week. The index subsequently touched a weekly high of 56,065.50 before closing at 55,844.00, gaining 587.35 points (+1.06%).
The weekly price action reflects improving buying interest, with Bank Nifty extending its gains for the second consecutive week after the recent decline. The index has recovered from lower levels and moved above the previous week's high, indicating a gradual improvement in sentiment. However, it continues to trade below the 50-week EMA, currently placed around 56,343, which remains a key hurdle for a stronger recovery. The Weekly RSI stands at 46.56, recovering from lower levels but remaining below the neutral 50 mark, suggesting that momentum is improving but bullish confirmation is still awaited.
Sectorally, the Nifty Private Bank Index gained 1.76%, supported by strong performance from ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank, both gaining around 3% during the week. In contrast, the Nifty PSU Bank Index ended marginally lower by 0.39%, indicating relative weakness in public sector banks. Among Bank Nifty constituents, Bank of Baroda declined 2.29%, emerging as one of the notable laggards.
Going ahead, Bank Nifty is likely to maintain a sideways to bullish bias as long as it sustains above the immediate support zone. A decisive move above 56,350–56,700, particularly a sustained reclaim of the 50-week EMA, could strengthen the recovery and improve the broader technical setup. On the downside, holding the 54,850–55,200 zone would be important to preserve the recent positive momentum.
Support: 54,850–55,200
Resistance: 56,350–56,700
Overall Bias: Sideways to Bullish
