Global News
• Oil surges as U.S.-Iran tensions threaten Middle East supply flows: Oil prices rose nearly 1% in early Wednesday trade, extending gains of over $4/ bbl in the previous session, as renewed U.S.-Iran strikes heightened concerns over Middle East supply disruptions and increased risks around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route carrying around one-fifth of global oil consumption. Brent crude rose 0.92% to $95.52/bbl, while WTI gained 0.89% to $91.02/bbl, with tanker attacks and Iran’s threat to further restrict shipping forcing traders to seek alternative crude supplies. Adding to the bullish sentiment, U.S. crude inventories fell by 2.6 million barrels in the week ended August 28, while distillate stocks declined by 265,000 barrels.

Government Security Market:
* The Inter-bank call money rate traded in the range of 4.00%- 5.18% on Wednesday ended at 4.70%.
* The 10 year benchmark (6.94% GS 2036) closed at 6.9754% on Wednesday Vs 6.9581% on Tuesday.
Global Debt Market:
U.S. Treasury yields were broadly higher on Wednesday as inflation and debt concerns pressured global government borrowing costs. The yield on the 10- year Treasury note the main benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt was 1 basis point higher at 4.81%. It also reached 4.814%, its highest level since November 2023. The 30-year Treasury yield was 2 basis points higher at 5.286%, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury note was near flat at 4.4%. Yields were also higher globally as investors continued to demand a greater premium to take on medium- and long-term government debt. The latest escalation in tensions in the Middle East has renewed fears about inflation proving entrenched, while traders increasingly expect interest rate hikes this month in the U.S. and beyond. “Investors are now staring directly into the eyes of an inflation monster that threatens to become stronger unless action is taken. Central banks typically raise interest rates to fight inflation, and market expectations for the scale of rate hikes continues to evolve,” Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, said in a Wednesday note. “Bonds are reaching the point where certain investors may seek to lock in high yields caused by the latest market volatility. What might be holding them back is an expectation that yields could get even higher if rates go up fast and hard, meaning certain bond investors could be playing a waiting game before piling in.”
