• Monsoon deficit widens to 42%, delaying kharif sowing and prompting a shift to short-duration crops: India’s kharif sowing season is facing delays as the southwest monsoon has weakened after its early onset, leaving cumulative rainfall 42% below the long-period average (LPA) during June 1–21. Central India has been the worst affected, with severe rainfall deficits in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, raising concerns over lower crop yields for pulses, oilseeds, paddy and cotton. Farmers in rain-deficient regions are considering shifting to short-duration and less water-intensive crops such as soybean and maize if rainfall does not improve soon. While some states like Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have received surplus rainfall, overall monsoon progress remains sluggish. The India Meteorological Department expects the monsoon to advance further and bring scattered rainfall in the coming days, while the government is preparing contingency plans for vulnerable districts amid concerns over a possible El Niño impact.
