Economic News

• Retail inflation in August rises to 4.8%, wholesale print up 9.9%: India's retail inflation reached 4.8% in August, its highest level since January. Wholesale inflation also climbed to 9.9%, driven by fuel and manufactured goods. Food inflation increased to 6%, with rural areas experiencing higher price pressures. Economists anticipate further inflation and potential interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India. The central bank's next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for October.

Global News

• Trump urges Fed to keep U.S. rates lowest globally despite persistent inflation: U.S. President Donald Trump urged the Federal Reserve to keep U.S. interest rates at the lowest level globally, arguing that the country’s strong credit position should not result in higher borrowing costs relative to other nations. His comments come ahead of the Fed’s policy meeting, with the federal funds rate currently at 3.5%-3.75% and markets expecting a potential rate hike as inflation remains elevated. August consumer inflation recorded its biggest monthly increase in four months, while higher import tariffs and surging energy prices linked to the Iran war are adding to price pressures. Trump has repeatedly criticized high interest rates, arguing that they disadvantage the U.S. and benefit other economies, although his administration has stated that it will respect Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s independence. A higher-for-longer interest-rate environment could weigh on economic growth and equity valuations, while persistent inflation may limit the Fed’s ability to ease monetary policy.
