Below the Inputs on Implications of the India- New Zealand FTA on Agri & Food Processing Sector by Soumyak Biswas, Partner, Food and Agribusiness, Business Advisory, BDO India
“The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand aims to enhance bilateral trade and strengthen co-operation across key sectors, including agriculture and food processing. Under the Agreement, India will secure 100 per cent duty-free access for its exports to New Zealand, benefiting agricultural and processed food products such as cereals, fruits, vegetables, spices, coffee and value-added foods. This is expected to improve export competitiveness and provide new market opportunities for Indian producers and exporters. The Government has ensured adequate protection for sensitive agricultural sectors by excluding products such as dairy, sugar, edible oils and select plantation crops from tariff concessions. These safeguards are intended to protect farmer livelihoods and maintain domestic food security. The Agreement also provides for cooperation in agricultural productivity and technology, including establishment of Centres of Excellence and collaboration in horticulture, post-harvest management and quality standards. These initiatives are expected to enhance farm productivity, reduce wastage and strengthen Agri-value chains. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the sector are expected to benefit from improved market access, investment opportunities and integration into global value chains. Overall, the India–New Zealand FTA reflects a balanced approach to trade liberalization, combining export growth with domestic safeguards and capacity building, in alignment with India’s long-term agricultural development objectives.”
