Indian Army and City Gas Distribution Industry Join Hands to Accelerate PNG Transition under ''Sena Sampark – Nirantar Urja, Nirantar Suraksha''
In a significant step towards strengthening energy resilience and accelerating the adoption of cleaner and reliable energy solutions across Army establishments, the Indian Army PNG Transition Webinar 2026 was organised today at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, under the theme “Sena Sampark – Nirantar Urja, Nirantar Suraksha.”
The programme was organised by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in association with the Indian Army and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), on behalf of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) industry, bringing together key stakeholders to establish a coordinated roadmap for accelerating PNG adoption across Army establishments.
As part of the first phase, 41 Army establishments have been identified for PNG conversion. A key outcome of the initiative was the signing of Letters of Understanding (LoUs) between 8 Army Stations and 6 CGD entities, covering more than 20,000 households. The participating CGD entities include Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), Think Gas, Torrent Gas, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Central U.P. Gas Limited (CUGL), with the CGD industry coming together to support the Army’s PNG transition.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Rahul Tandon, Business Head - Gas, BPCL, said, “The transition of Army establishments to PNG is an important step towards building a reliable, continuous and future-ready energy ecosystem for critical establishments. ‘Sena Sampark – Nirantar Urja, Nirantar Suraksha’ brings together the Army, regulator and CGD industry towards a common objective of enabling a structured transition to PNG. BPCL is committed to facilitating this collective effort and supporting the Army through the transition journey.”
The initiative will focus on streamlining the transition through coordinated planning across network readiness, statutory permissions, regulatory requirements, infrastructure development, retrofitting and customer service. A PNG Handbook was also released during the programme as a ready reference for Army establishments undertaking the transition.
The Indian Army has committed to taking the initiative forward in a structured and time-bound manner. Twelve establishments are already actively participating, while another 29 are being taken up, covering all 41 establishments identified under the first phase. The Army and participating CGD entities have committed to completing the PNG infrastructure and connections for these establishments by the end of FY 2026-27.
The initiative marks an important step in strengthening collaboration between the Indian Army, PNGRB and the CGD industry and creating a strong foundation for wider PNG adoption across Army establishments. It also comes ahead of the launch of PNG Drive 3.0 from October 1, 2026, adding further momentum to the collective efforts towards expanding PNG adoption across the country.
