Southwest monsoon season well under way
Southwest monsoon at a 13% surplus as of 17th Jul’22
* The rainfall surplus in central/southern regions has increased to 31%/37% as of 18th Jul’22 from 25%/34% (v/s normal levels). Moreover, the deficit in the northwest region has reduced to -7% as of 17th Jul’22 from -10% as of 13th Jul’22. Consequently, the all India cumulative rainfall as of 17th Jul’22 stood at a surplus of 13% as compared to a surplus of 11% as of 13th Jul’22 (refer Exhibits 1, 2, and 3).
* As of 15th Jul’22, Kharif sowing was 0.1% higher than the area sown last year, v/s -12% seen last year (refer Exhibit 4).
* As expected, rainfall in Jul’22 is proceeding in full swing and fears of higher food prices are dissuading too. The month-wise rainfall received over CY02-21 shows that on an average June received only 19% of the season’s rainfall, July received almost one-third, followed by August at 29%. In CY21, while June received 21% of the rainfall, July received 30%, followed by August at 22% (refer Exhibit 5).
