Your retirement is supposed to mark the advent of your golden years. It is often said that friends, family and fun are the bedrocks of a happy retirement. It is the time when you can get involved in activities you always wanted to do, when the professional commitments were keeping you away from it. Now you have complete independence and autonomy over how you want to spend your time. In order to enjoy a joyous retirement, make sure you plan for it well, financially. If you have invested right through the duration of your working life, you would have received proceeds of an immediate annuity or a retirement savings plan, or a pension plan. It often helps to have a corpus of money to live the retirement of your dreams along with regular payouts to take care of the daily expenses.

So we bring you a fun checklist of things you could do to prepare holistically for your retirement.

  1. Plan where you want to live post-retirement and get a hobby
Having lived in cities, slogging through the daylight hours, the rush and the crowd of the cities can get exhausting. The good news is that after retirement you are not bound to live at one place. You can choose to live in a suburb, in a hill station or even beachside. It would also help if you inculcate a hobby - learn something new. It would be nice to keep those creative juices flowing.

  2. Take up a sport and stay physically engaged
It is imperative to stay physically active for your health and heart. You can take up a sports club membership and play there regularly, or just stick to a routine of walking in the park. There are lots of yoga clubs for the retired bunch too!

  3. Go for a fancy retirement vacation like a cruise (figure out how to fund it)
The most thrilling possibility that comes with retirement is travel! You can now choose to leave everything behind and head to the destination you have admired for. The only catch? Figure out how you are going to fund it. Your payouts from a pension plan and other investments might come in handy.

  4. Get entrepreneurial if you feel it in you
Have a business idea that could solve a need? There’s no entry age for entrepreneurship. You can get started on your idea if you still have the hustle in you! Besides with the decades of professional experience that you have, it will be a productive undertaking.

  5. Make friends across a spectrum of ages
There’s no parallel for human interaction! Making friends from various walks of life and chatting with people of different ages will broaden your horizon and keep your thoughts always challenged.

  6. Volunteer for a worthy cause. Write about what you know. Create a cultural footprint.
If you’ve lived a fulfilling life with rich experiences, you may find it worthy to share your experiences with others. You could find someone who is trying to make it in your field and volunteer to mentor them. Or you can share your experiences through a book, a blog. We make it to the age of 60 with a lot of anecdotes and experiences in our kitty, you may want to share them with the world. This way, you will also get to leave a cultural footprint in your second innings, beyond the work you’ve done in your professional life so far.
