The Indian rupee touched its weakest level on record on Monday, as persistent outflows from local stocks blunted the impact of a weaker dollar that helped lift the currency's regional peers ahead of the U.S. presidential election. The rupee closed at 84.1150 against the U.S. dollar after touching its all-time low of 84.1225 earlier in the session. Benchmark Indian equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, fell more than 1% each on the day, their worst single-day performance...
Rupee touches all-time low on equity outflows, US elections in focus
The Indian rupee is expected to hold a narrow range on Friday on a recovery in the dollar index post the U.S. inflation data-fuelled selloff, while portfolio and corporate flows will be in focus. Non-deliverable forwards indicate rupee will open mostly unchanged from 83.50 to the U.S. dollar in the previous session. The rupee did not benefit from the broad selloff in the dollar on Thursday after the softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data. "What can you say when there is not th...
Rupee to focus on recovery in dollar index, flows
The Indian currency is expected to inch higher at the open on Thursday, ignoring the weakness in its Asian peers and the uptick in U.S. Treasury yields. Non-deliverable forwards indicate the rupee will open at 83.46-83.48 to the U.S. dollar, compared with its close of 83.5175 in the previous session. "There is nothing much here. A slightly softer opening (for USD/INR), if it does materialize, will not change the directionless mode we are in," an FX trader at a bank said. &q...
Rupee to shrug off drop in Asia FX, higher US yields
The Indian rupee was largely steady on Wednesday even as most Asian currencies trended lower after investors solidified bets that the U.S. Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut policy rates at its March meeting. The rupee was at 83.09 against the U.S. dollar as of 11:20 a.m. IST, barely changed from its close of 83.1050 in the previous session. The dollar index was up 0.1% at 103.59 while most Asian currencies fell, with the Korean won leading losses. Job openings in the United St...
Rupee little changed even as most Asian peers slip ahead of Fed outcome
Indian domestic bonds will be included in the JPMorgan emerging market debt index from June 2024, paving the way for billions of dollars worth inflows into the world's fifth-largest economy. Here are reactions from analysts, economists and market participants:SANJAY MATHUR, CHIEF ECONOMIST, SOUTHEAST ASIA AND INDIA, ANZ, SINGAPORE:"Bond inclusion should help lower the cost of capital, at least indirectly. At the same time, we note that bond inclusion will add to volatility in Indian bonds. Thi...
