India plans to sell wheat from its state reserves to bulk consumers such as flour millers and biscuit makers from next month, according to a government order seen by Reuters, as it seeks to keep a lid on local prices by boosting supplies. The government has allowed the state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) to start offering wheat from its inventories from next month at 23,250 rupees ($279) a ton, the order said, nearly 12% lower than prevailing open market prices. FCI is yet to deci...

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has successfully procured 266 lakh metric tonnes of wheat during the current Rabi marketing season 2024-25, surpassing last year's figure of 262 lakh metric tonnes to secure the nation's foodgrain sufficiency, the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution said on Wednesday. Punjab expected to procure 132 lakh metric tons wheat: Chief Secretary
India has asked global and domestic trade houses to avoid buying new-season wheat from local farmers to help the government-backed Food Corporation of India (FCI) procure large quantities to shore up its depleting reserves, sources said. India, the world's biggest wheat consumer and grower after China, banned exports in 2022 and is keen to bolster stocks and tame prices that surged after dry weather hurt output in 2022 and 2023. Rising wheat prices forced the go...
Exclusive-India asks traders to avoid buying new-season wheat to shore up state stocks
Indian wheat inventories held in government warehouses dropped to 9.7 million metric tons, the lowest since 2017, after two straight years of low crops prompted the state to sell record volumes to boost domestic supplies and lower local prices. Wheat reserves in state stores totalled 9.7 million tons at the start of this month, down from 11.7 million tons in March 2022, the state-run Food Corporation of India said. Despite the tight supply, the government has resisted calls to enc...

Union Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said that the agriculture sector will be the foundational pillar spearheading the nation towards becoming 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. Speaking at the launch of ‘e-Kisan Upaj Nidhi’ (Digital Gateway) of the Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA) here, the minister announced that the security deposit charges at WDRA registered warehouses will soon be reduced to encourage m...
Government cuts warehouse charges to help farmers
India's wheat inventories at state warehouses have dropped to 19 million metric tons, the lowest in seven years, two government sources said on Friday, as two years of falling production forced state-run agencies to sell more grain to private players. Last year, India, the world's second-biggest wheat producer, banned exports after output was curtailed due to a heat wave and overseas sales picked up as Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent global prices to multi-year highs. Whil...
