FII AND DII WEEKLY ACTIVITY: 24-10-26
Benchmark indices witnessed a sharp decline last week as weak global cues and a surge in Brent crude prices weighed on investor sentiment. Sustained FII outflows and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties further dampened risk appetite. The Nifty started the week on a negative note and extended its losses through the truncated trading week, declining in all four sessions to hit an intraweek low of 22,372 on Friday. The index eventually closed the week 2.4% lower at 22,600. Bank Nifty declined 2.8% during the week, while broader markets underperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 5.6% and 7.3%, respectively, amid broad-based selling pressure.
On the flows front, FIIs remained net sellers for the tenth straight week, though the quantum moderated further to Rs. 26.97bn from Rs. 89.91bn, with buying on two of the four sessions. DIIs stayed net buyers for the tenth consecutive week, stepping up purchases to Rs. 109.42bn and absorbing the bulk of the selling. Month-to-date, FIIs have sold a net Rs. 514.66bn against DII net buying of Rs. 591.10bn, with the Nifty down from its September-end close of 22,620.45.
Going ahead, the steady moderation in FII selling offers some comfort, though elevated crude and sharp broader-market weakness keep the downside risk alive. Market participants will closely monitor the US Federal Reserve’s FOMC policy decision and the Bank of Japan’s rate decision in the coming week. On the macroeconomic front, US GDP data will be a key focus, while movements in Brent crude prices, developments in the US-Iran and Russia-Ukraine conflicts, and ongoing quarterly earnings will remain key drivers of investor sentiment.
