Tamil Nadu: Huge crowd throngs markets in Madurai ahead of Diwali
A large number of people thronged the market in Madurai ahead of Diwali. Ahead of the festival of lights, people go shopping for home decor items, diya and more across several cities. Diwali is celebrated with great fervour and gaiety across India as it marks the return of King Rama to Ayodhya after he defeated the powerful demon king of Lanka, Ravana. Legend says millions of lamps were lit when Rama returned after 14 years of exile. Diwali is also celebrated in honour of the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi, It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi showers her blessings upon those homes that are clean and well lit.
