• apan’s core inflation hit 2.1% in September, strengthening expectations of a BOJ rate hike in December amid rising energy costs and broadening price pressures: Japan’s core inflation rose to a nine-month high of 2.1% in September from 1.7% in August, exceeding the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) 2% target for the first time in nine months, driven by higher energy costs, a weak yen, elevated import prices and strong AI demand. Underlying inflation excluding fresh food and fuel accelerated to 2.4%, while goods and services inflation also strengthened, indicating broader price pressures. Although the BOJ is expected to keep rates unchanged at its October 30 meeting after raising them to 1.25% last month, persistent inflation and resilient loan demand could prompt further monetary tightening, with markets expecting a rate hike to 1.50% in December and a potential terminal rate of 1.75 to 2.0%.
