Global News

• Dollar holds near two-month high as rising Treasury yields and global inflation concerns support the greenback: The US dollar held near a twomonth high at 101.48 against a basket of currencies, supported by rising US Treasury yields and concerns over persistent global inflationary pressures from the Middle East war. Softer-than-expected US August inflation and downward revisions to July data reduced expectations of another near-term Fed rate hike, but elevated 10- and 30-year Treasury yields continued to support the greenback. The euro fell to $1.1330 and declined nearly 2.5% in September amid Europe’s energy and debt concerns, while sterling slipped 2.1% last month to $1.3264. The yen eased to 157.82 per dollar but gained nearly 1.5% in September, supported by expectations of BOJ tightening and intervention risks. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar weakened to a two-month low of $0.6940, while the New Zealand dollar remained near its lowest level since November 2025.

The 30 -year Treasury bond was last 4 basis points lower to 5.553%, after rising to its highest level since 2002 on Wednesday. The 10-year Treasury was down 3 basis points to 5.221% and the 2-year Treasury note yield was 1 basis point lower to 4.876%. Recent pressure on yields reflects the potential for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, as high oil prices driven by the Middle East conflict lift inflation expectations. Traders are now pricing in a 45% chance of another Fed rate hike at its next meeting in October, according to the CME FedWatch tool. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said in comments late Tuesday that “there is no need for urgency, and we have time to gather more information” before the Fed’s October meeting. Investors will await the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge on Wednesday, with the reading of the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index due. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect a monthly rise of 0.3%, and an annual rise of 3.7%.
