Global News

• IMF warns AI investment slowdown, prolonged Middle East conflict and rising debt could threaten global growth and financial stability.: The IMF has projected global GDP growth at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, supported by strong AI infrastructure investment, while warning that a prolonged Middle East conflict, elevated oil prices and rising debt levels pose significant risks. If oil prices remain above $130 per barrel through Q1FY28, global growth could decline by 0.5 percentage points in 2027, while a sharp slowdown in AI investment could reduce global GDP by 1.1% by 2028 and US output by 1.8%. The IMF also cautioned that an AI market correction could trigger asset price declines, weaken consumption and trade, and increase financial stability risks. Additionally, rising bond yields and debt-servicing costs could strain government finances, particularly in developing economies, prompting calls for fiscal consolidation and tighter control over public borrowing.
