Global News

• Oil falls 2% as supply fears ease, but geopolitical risks persist: Oil prices fell nearly 2% on Monday, with Brent crude declining $1.93 to $100.32/bbl and WTI falling $1.68 to $89.43/bbl, as Middle Eastern crude exports rose above pre-war levels on four of the seven days in the final week of September and the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves. However, the decline was limited by persistent geopolitical and supply concerns, including ongoing US-Iran tensions, attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, renewed Saudi Arabia–Houthi fighting and risks to energy infrastructure and shipping routes. Market confidence was also tempered by uncertainty over how much of the G7 release represents new supply, while the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to just 283 million barrels, its lowest level since 1982. Saudi Aramco warned that global crude and refinedproduct supplies could remain tight and that rebuilding inventories after emergency withdrawals may take up to two years, while OPEC+ delayed its 2027 capacity review due to disruptions from the Iran war. Overall, improving exports and potential reserve releases provided near-term supply relief, but elevated geopolitical risks continued to support a high oil price risk premium.
