Weekly Update: Southwest monsoons, water reservoir levels, and kharif sowing
Southwest monsoon at 9% deficit as of 24th Aug’21
* India’s cumulative rainfall reported a deficit of 9% v/s normal levels as of 24th Aug’21, similar to last week (Exhibits 1, 2). With this, the average deficit in Aug’21 thus far has been 5.8% v/s normal levels, higher than the average deficit of 3% in Jul’21. As for region-wide distribution, the situation has worsened in the northwestern and southern regions. The central regions exhibited a marginally lower deficit as of 24th Aug’21 compared with a week ago.
* The deficit in the eastern and northeastern regions has remained unchanged at 11% v/s normal levels as of 24th Aug’21. While rainfall in the northwestern region has deteriorated to -12% of normal levels as of 24th Aug’21 from -9% v/s normal levels as of 18th Aug’21, that in the southern region fell from a surplus of 5% v/s normal levels to only 3% as of 24th Aug’21.
