NAFED has procured 743207 MT Chana till 11th April-2023. Out of total procurement, Maharashtra procured 343470 MT, Gujarat 158081 MT, Telangana 50238 MT, Karnataka 53402 MT, AP 47949 MT, MP 89456 MT, Rajasthan 404 MT and UP 217 MT.

As per the Australia Bureau of Statistics, Chickpeas export from Australia remained at 84,879 MT in February 2023, down by 20% from 106183 MT in January 2023. However, total export surged by 5% to 310,627 during the Marketing Year from 295, 835 MT. Bangladesh emerged the largest importer who purchased 56,957 MT followed by Pakistan (10,506 MT) and UAE (6583 MT).

Five states – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have expressed their intention to purchase more than 0.3 million tonne (MT) of chana (gram) from the buffer stocks being offered by the Centre at the discounted rate of Rs 8/kg for distribution under various social welfare schemes. These pulses will be supplied by the states through various social sector schemes, including mid -day meals and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)

The area under rabi chana across the country was at 11.2 mln ha as of Feb 2, down 2% on year, data from the farm ministry showed. The decline was primarily due to lower sowing in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. Sowing of chana across the country has ended for the rabi season. On a week-on-week basis, the total acreage rose 0.6% from 11 mln ha, data showed. In Maharashtra, the second-largest grower, chana was sown across 2.9 mln ha, up 9.6% on year. In Rajashthan, it was sown across 2.1 mln ha, up 4.9% on year. The acreage in Madhya Pradesh, the top grower, declined 11.1% to 2.2 mln ha. In Gujarat, it fell 31% to 765,000 ha, whereas it declined by 18.2% to 341,000 ha in Andhra Pradesh

According to the 2nd Advance Estimates of production of major crops for 2022 -23 released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, total kharif pulses production during 2022 - 23 is estimated at 278.10 lakh tonne. Under the Pulses, Tur production is estimated at 36.66 lakh tonnes (previous estimate 38.9 lakh tonnes), Urad at 26.82 lakh tonnes including Kharif 18.46 lakh tonnes and Rabi 8.36 lakh tonnes (previous Kharif estimate 18.4 lakh tonnes), Moong at 35.45 lakh tonnes including Kharif 19.07 lakh tonnes and Rabi 16.38 tonnes tonnes (previous Kharif estimate 17.5 lakh tonnes), Lentil at 15.99 lakh tonnes and Gram at 136.32 lakh tonnes. Other Kharif and Rabi production is estimated at 7.38 lakh tonnes and 19.48 lakh tonnes. Thus, total Kharif Pulses production is estimated at 81.57 lakh tonnes and Rabi at 196.53 lakh tonnes.

As per official release, India has imported a total 3,97,123 MT of pulses including Tur, Urad, Masur and few quantities of Moong and Bengal Gram in December 2022. Amongst which 2,01,838 MT is Tur, 97,997 MT Urad, 91,739 MT Masur, 130 MT Moong and 5,418 MT Bengal Gram. In November 2022, total import of pulses was 3.23 LMT
