NEW DELHI : The government has joined the Telegram messaging platform to disseminate reliable information on COVID-19 pandemic. The government has christened its handle as 'MyGov Corona News Desk' on the Internet-based messaging channel.

For the existing members of Telegram, the message reads, “For latest updates on COVID-19 in India, government of India advisories and updates, visit corona.mygov.in."

The Telegram group has already registered over 785,470 members.

The Telegram group is currently allowing members to read government updates but they cannot ask questions.

There is an FAQ section about the virus, updates regarding the state of public transportation and infographs about basic dos and don’ts.

Sourcing from ministry of health and family welfare, the Telegram channel gives information regarding the total number of deaths, active cases, recovered and discharged cases, list of private labs in the country, helpline numbers besides other useful data to combat the pandemic.

While the country remains under a lockdown, the channel is also spreading messages like, “Please stay at home and comply with lockdown guidelines to help yourself, family and community stay safe."

Since the disease erupted in China in December, it has affected 918 people in India in all with 20 of them dead, according to data available on Johns Hopkins University website. There are 775 active cases of COVID-19 in the country, according to data available on ministry of health and family welfare.
