India's Soyabean Crushing Declines to 117 Lakh Tonnes by Amit Gupta, Kedia Advisory
India’s soyabean crushing is projected to decline to 117 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 oil year due to lower availability, despite a higher crop output of 125.82 lakh tonnes. Reduced carryover stocks of 8.94 lakh tonnes and lower soyabean imports, estimated at 3 lakh tonnes, have contributed to the drop. Soyameal production is expected to fall to 92.32 lakh tonnes, with exports pegged at 15.50 lakh tonnes, down from 22.75 lakh tonnes last year. Domestic feed consumption remains steady at 66 lakh tonnes. October crushing and soyameal production have already shown significant year-over-year declines, highlighting the downward trend.

India’s soyabean crushing for the 2024-25 oil year is projected to decline to 117 lakh tonnes, compared to 122.50 lakh tonnes in the previous year. This reduction comes as total soyabean availability drops to 137.76 lakh tonnes, largely driven by a sharp decline in carryover stocks from 24.07 lakh tonnes last year to 8.94 lakh tonnes. Despite a higher crop output of 125.82 lakh tonnes, reduced imports of just 3 lakh tonnes have exacerbated the supply crunch.
Soyameal production is estimated at 92.32 lakh tonnes, down from 96.66 lakh tonnes a year ago, reflecting lower soyabean availability. Exports are forecast to drop significantly to 15.50 lakh tonnes from 22.75 lakh tonnes, while domestic feed consumption remains steady at 66 lakh tonnes. Food sector offtake, however, shows a marginal uptick at 8.5 lakh tonnes.
In October, soyabean crushing fell to 9.5 lakh tonnes from 11.50 lakh tonnes in the same period last year, while soyameal production declined to 7.5 lakh tonnes from 9.07 lakh tonnes. Soyameal exports in October were flat at 1.11 lakh tonnes, with France emerging as the largest buyer at 44,301 tonnes, followed by Nepal and Afghanistan.
The soyabean market faces significant challenges from reduced availability, impacting crushing and meal production. Despite a strong crop, tight supplies are expected to keep prices firm.
