Cement Sector Performance Report

Sales of Indian cement industry picked up in October 2009 after a break in last couple of months as real estate demand revived post-monsoon. Top three cement players who accounts nearly 60-65 percent of overall consumption of cement in the country has posted month-on- month (MoM) growth in sales numbers.
 
Aditya Birla Group 

Aditya Birla group (AB Group) comprising of Grasim Industries and Ultra Tech Cement reported a strong 18.36 percent increase in its cement production to 20.850 million metric tonnes for the April-October, 2009 against 17.616 million metric tonnes for the same period a year ago. The group’s dispatches rose by 18.03 percent to 20.684 million metric tonnes in April-October, 2009 vis-à-vis 17.524 million metric tonnes in the year-ago period. Production and dispatches of the group for the month ended October 20009 stood at 2.934
million metric tonnes and 2.819 million metric tonnes respectively, registering an increase of 12.46 percent and 11.12 percent over the same month, a year ago. On MoM basis AB Group’s production and dispatches reported a growth of 7.08 percent and 1.77 percent respectively.

ACC 

ACC witnessed a 2.00 percent increase in its cement production to 12.240 million metric tonnes in the April-October period against 12.180 million metric tonnes reported a year ago. Company’s dispatches rose by 2.01 percent to 12.180 million metric tonnes in the April- October period, compared with 11.940 million metric tonnes in the same period a year ago. In October 2009, cement production and dispatches stood at 1.710 and 1.690 million metric
tonnes respectively compared to cement production and dispatches of 1.740 and 1.700 million metric tonnes in October 2008, witnessing a decline of 1.72 and 0.59 percent, respectively. However, on MoM basis, production and dispatches both reported growth of 4.27 percent and 3.68 percent respectively.
 
Ambuja Cement 

Ambuja Cement witnessed 6.89 percent increase in its cement production to 10.630 million metric tonnes in the April-October period against 9.945 million metric tonnes reported a year ago. Company’s dispatches increased by 7.04 percent to 10.557 million metric tonnes in the same period, compared to 9.863 million metric tonnes a year ago. In October 2009, Ambuja Cement posted a 3.24 percent YoY increase in the production to 1.498 million
metric tonnes vis-a-vis 1.451 million metric tonnes, reported for the month ended October 2008. Company's cement dispatches witnessed a growth of 3.03 percent to 1.464 million metric tonnes in October 2009 compared to 1.421 million metric tonnes a yera ago. Cement production and dispatches on MoM basis, grew by 8.39 percent and 7.73percent, respectively,
